Asendia, the Joint Venture between La Poste and Swiss Post – has reinforced its commitment to sustainability by signing up to participate in a carbon offsetting scheme which involves the support of renewable energy projects in India. This important step is in line with Asendia’s objectives and long-term vision to achieve environmental and corporate sustainability. is measuring and reducing direct and indirect carbon emissions. For emissions that cannot be reduced, Asendia is committed to voluntary carbon offsetting: it’s all part of the service for their European customers. The project is verified by one of the most internationally recognized carbon offset standards – the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). Combining in-house carbon reduction and carbon offsetting, Asendia’s European customers have been able to benefit from carbon neutrality for the provided transport services, at no extra cost. From July 2014, all mail and deliveries from European customers is carbon neutral, at no cost to the customer. Today, sustainable actions have become a key concern for the logistics industry. Asendia has bought VCUs from a Indian wind VCS project located in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Rajasthan. Combined, 113 turbines are generating an annual production of nearly 470,000 MWh of renewable electricity. This is equivalent to the annual power consumption of 600,000 individuals and enables Asendia to offset more than 41’000 teq CO2 per year. As well as supplying cleaner energy, the wind farms are also providing strong social and economic benefits to local communities. The project developer invests a share of their profits back into local initiatives, supporting education, health as well as providing assistance to farmers. Among others this includes, the provision of free school meals, helping to raise school attendance; mobile health clinics for families and their animals; the improvement of local roads; financial skills workshops for women to help them start their own businesses and become financially independent. Asendia also offers advice to its customers on how to reduce their carbon footprint when using its services.
